Essay describes the conditions leading to the establishment of pastoral tax and its implementation in the Kyiv Metropolitanate. During the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, this symbolic “gift of love” significantly formulated a specific paternalistic self-consciousness that was dominant in clerical circles of the Slavic-Byzantine Rite (both Orthodox and Uniate) until the Enlightenment. Created on the basis of the pastoral tax, the fiscal mechanism of the Ruthenian Church substantially impacted the modality of hierarchical-cooperative relationships between the bishops and the parish clergy of those times. This essay also addresses a larger spectrum of issues related to the functioning of the pastoral tax in various archbishoprics of the Kyiv Metro po li tanate – canon discipline, simony practices, education initiatives of the eparchy, material welfare of the priests and the financial competence of the bishop residences, the role of the Apostolic See and the lay state authorities in the Early Modern Period in the modernization of church structures, etc.
