At Cultural Crossroads: The Holy Trinity Shrine and Monastery in Vilnius / ed. by Alfredas Bumblauskas, Salvijus Kulevičius, Ihor Skochylias. Vilnius: Vilnius University Press, 2017. 472 p.
The collective monograph of Lithuanian and Ukrainian researchers offers a new inclusive approach to the interpretation of the common cultural heritage of both nations. The geographical localization of Lithuania on the Baltic-Slavic borderlands of the Latin and Byzantine civilizations determined the appearance in Vilnius in the 14th century one of the oldest religious institutions in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – originally Orthodox, but from the 16th century Uniate monastery of the Holy Trinity. Until the middle of the nineteenth century the community of monks of the eastern rite and the institutions created by them were the meeting place between the Lithuanian West and the Ruthenian (Ukrainian-Byelorussian) East, as well as the spiritual center of the Basilian order and the entire Kyivan (Vilno) Metropolitanate. At the same time, the Holy Trinity monastery has become an important part of the public space of Slavia Orthodoxa, Slavia Unita and Lithuania Latina – cultural models in the polyethnic and multiconfessional society of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
