Yaremenko M. Facing the Challenges of Unification and Discipline: Kyivan Orthodox Metropolitanate in 18th century. Lviv: UCU Publishing House, 2017. 272 p. (Series “Kyivan Christianity”, Vol. 4).
The monograph investigates the 18th century process of gradual transformation of the Kyivan Metropolitanate into a part of the unified and disciplined imperial synodal Church. The author studies in detail the realization of the incorporated policy of the Petersburg Synod on the higher doctrinal level (unification of liturgical texts) and the level of parish (unification of church practices and disciplining the parishioners). The influence of laity and priests, as well as their role in the introduction of new ecclesial practices in the parishes of Hetmanshchyna, is a subject of a separate investigation. Special attention is paid to the analysis of visible changes in the positioning and self-accepting of Kyivan ecclesiastical elite as a way to respond to the Russian policy of unification. Despite the change in the jurisdictional subordination in late 17th century, the Kyivan Metropolitanate continued, at least for another century, to remain part of the Kyivan Christianity’s milieu.
