The monograph is dedicated to female monastic communities of the Orthodox and Uniate Churches which functioned in the early modern period on the territories of two western eparchies of the Kyivan Metropolitanate – Lviv and Peremyshl. Taking mostly unpublished sources, the author investigates the ecclesiastical, material, legal, and social status of female monasteries, their network and peculiarities of internal organizational structure. The principles of formation of nuns, prayer practices, educational, charitable, and economic activity, as well as other aspects of everyday life of a monastic entity are all studied separately. The role of nunnery in local society is traced through its relations with the clergy, church structures and the “world” (churchwardens, lower middle class citizens, peasantry, nobility). Of special value are the appendices abounding in factual information – biographical vocabulary with over 300 nuns and a catalog of nunneries in both eparchies.
